ILUG Cochin will be conducting a meet this sunday(23rd Aug, 2009). The meeting is from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM. The agenda for the meeting is The Campaign for Promoting Free Software in Educational Institutions and the technical presentation will be ‘Exploring the Internals of the Operating System for normal users’ By Sameer.

The meet starts with an introduction to Free Software and GNU Movement. Discussion on Free Software Licenses, Open Source Software.

  • For Back office and Administration work in schools and colleges
  • Services offered by colleges and universities.
  • Libraries.

Technical Presentation

  • A brief introduction to Operating System Layers
  • What are kernel and Device Drivers?
  • How we see the kernel and interact with it
  • Customizing the kernel to our needs
  • Adding new drivers for devices.
  • Optimizing the kernel for performance.

There will also be discussion on the feedback for “Community Based Curriculum” initiative from the “Syllabus Review Meeting” conducted by IT@Schools last week, in which ILUG Cochin participated.

As time permits there may be a Q&A session
